3/23/2018 Paul Blackburn, Oak, P
Blackburn will be shut down from throwing for 10 days because of forearm tightness. An MRI revealed no structural damage.

Analysis: Blackburn went 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA in 10 starts in his first season in the majors in 2017, striking out 22 om 58 2/3 innings. He was competing for a spot in the rotation for this season.
3/23/2018 Tim Lincecum, Tex, P
Lincecum was scratched from his first appearance with the Rangers due to a blister on his right middle finger.

Analysis: It's likely that he'll begin the season on the disabled list.
3/23/2018 Jeff Samardzija, SF, P
San Francisco Giants starter Jeff Samardzija reportedly has a strained pectoral muscle that will shut him down for at least a week and likely force him to start the season on the disabled list.

Analysis: Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Thursday that an MRI confirmed the diagnosis of an issue that has been bothering Samardzija all spring. Samardzija has a 10.64 ERA in four starts this spring as his fastball has lacked its usual velocity.
3/22/2018 Wade Miley, Mil, P
Miley was injured Wednesday, exiting his start in the fifth inning after trying to field a bunt.

Analysis: The team says an MRI showed a slight muscle tear in his left groin that will keep him from throwing for two weeks. The 31-year-old has been competing for a spot in Milwaukee's rotation.
3/22/2018 Kennys Vargas, Cin, 1B
The Reds have claimed Vargas off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

Analysis: The 27-year-old Vargas batted .253 with career highs of 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in 78 games last season. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound switch-hitter made all his starts with Minnesota at either first base or designated hitter.
3/22/2018 Dylan Bundy, Bal, P
Bundy has been picked to start the Baltimore Orioles' opener against Minnesota on March 29.

Analysis: The 24-year-old right-hander led the Orioles in wins last season, when he was 13-9 with a 4.24 ERA. Bundy beat out Kevin Gausman, who started last year's opener, and Chris Tillman, the starter of the previous three. Last year was Bundy's first season in the rotation.
3/22/2018 Boone Logan, Mil, P
Logan is beginning the season on the DL because of a triceps injury.
3/22/2018 Steven Souza Jr., Ari, RF
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo says Souza Jr. likely will open the season on the disabled list after straining his right pectoral muscle while diving for a baseball in a spring training game Wednesday night.

Analysis: Lovullo says Souza will be out "a couple of weeks at least." The extent of the injury was discovered in an MRI on Thursday. Lovullo said the top two internal candidates to replace Souza in right field are Chris Owings and Jarrod Dyson.
3/21/2018 Joaquin Benoit, Was, P
Benoit is dealing with a forearm strain and won't be ready for the start of the regular season.

Analysis: The 40-year-old reliever hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game in more than a week, though he shouldn't miss a whole lot of time provided the soreness doesn't linger. Benoit isn't expected to have a prominent role in the Nationals' bullpen, so this news shouldn't have much fantasy impact.
3/21/2018 Alex Cobb, Bal, P
The Orioles and Cobb have finalized a four-year contract that will pay the free-agent hurler $57 million.

Analysis: After having to wait out this offseason's slow market, Cobb lands himself in a very good spot with the Orioles in great need of another proven rotation arm. The former Tampa Bay Ray returned from Tommy John surgery to win a career-high 12 games and post a solid 3.66 ERA in 29 starts last season. He'll need some time to get stretched out but figures to be ready to contribute sometime in April.
3/20/2018 Dan Straily, Mia, P
Straily could miss his first start of the season due to a right elbow strain. He was expected to pitch the second game March 30 against the Cubs.

Analysis: Straily went 10-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 starts in 2017.
3/20/2018 Michael Lorenzen, Cin, P
Lorenzen might begin the season on the DL due to a right shoulder strain.

Analysis: Lorenzen led the Reds with 70 appearances in 2017 while going 8-4 with a 4.45 ERA over 83 innings.
3/20/2018 Clay Buchholz, KC, P
Buchholz and the Kansas City Royals have finalized a minor league contract.

Analysis: Buchholz made two starts for the Phillies last season and needed surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm. He was 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in 7 1/3 innings.
3/20/2018 Justin Turner, LAD, 3B
Turner has a broken left wrist after being hit by a pitch during a spring training game. Turner was struck by a pitch from Oakland right-hander Kendall Graveman in the first inning Monday night. Turner grunted and winced as he jogged away from the plate toward the dugout, his hand hanging limp at his side. He was quickly visited by a trainer and replaced by Donovan Solano.

Analysis: General manager Farhan Zaidi said the team didn't know yet how long Turner would be out, but it should be a matter of at least a few weeks. Turner says he'll visit the doctor again Tuesday to hopefully learn more. The 33-year-old Turner hit .322 with 21 homers and 71 RBIs last season. He also led the team and finished third in the majors by getting plunked 19 times.
3/19/2018 Franklin Perez, Det, P
Perez is expected to miss at least three months with a right lat strain. The Tigers say Perez was injured in a minor league game. There is no surgery recommended at this point, but the recovery is expected to take a minimum of 12 weeks.

Analysis: Perez, a 20-year-old right-hander, was acquired by Detroit in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston last season. Perez went 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA across two levels of the minors last year. He made 10 starts at Class A and six at Double-A. Baseball America tabbed Perez as Detroit's top prospect this offseason.
3/19/2018 Carlos Estévez, Col, P
Estevez will not be ready for opening day after experiencing a setback in his recovery from a left oblique injury.

Analysis: The Rockies are hoping for a mid-April return from the reliever. Estevez went 5-0 with a 5.57 ERA in 35 appearances last season and likely won't have a whole lot of fantasy value.
3/19/2018 Daniel Murphy, Was, 2B
Murphy (knee) has yet to take part in a spring training game, putting his availability for the start of the regular season in doubt.

Analysis: The Nationals have taken it slow with their second baseman, who underwent microfracture knee surgery in October and has progressed only to taking batting practice and fielding ground balls. Washington does have a pair of capable fill-in options in Howie Kendrick and Wilmer Difo should Murphy begin the season on the DL.
3/19/2018 Ronald Acuña Jr., Atl, CF
The Braves have reassigned Acuna, the team's top prospect, to minor league camp.

Analysis: Acuna won't be in the minors long, as the move was almost certainly made so he won't accrue a full season of service time. The 20-year-old was absolutely raking during the spring, producing a .432 average with four home runs in 16 Grapefruit League games.
3/19/2018 Zack Greinke, Ari, P
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Monday that Greinke (groin) will not start the team's season opener against Colorado on March 29.

Analysis: Greinke is a little behind after he had last Wednesday's start against Cincinnati cut short after just one inning when he experienced some groin tightness. The Arizona ace did throw a successful bullpen session Sunday, however, and is slated to start Wednesday's spring training game with the Giants. Robbie Ray looms as the top candidate to start opening day.
3/19/2018 Tommy Joseph, Tex, 1B
The Rangers have claimed Joseph off waivers from the Phillies.

Analysis: Joseph has hit 43 homers over his first two major league seasons but became expendable when the Phillies signed Carlos Santana over the winter. The 26-year-old figures to get most of his at-bats in Texas against left-handed pitchers as a first baseman or DH.
